X BAIN DEVICE

What is Genu Valgum (X BAIN)?

Valgum, more commonly referred to as “valgus” or “knock-knee” in medical terminology, is a condition in which the knees angle inward towards each other or towards the midline of the body when the legs are completely straight. The opposite condition is genu varum, also known as “bow-leggedness”.

Flexibility in joints is completely normal during childhood, which is why your children can sit cross-legged or in any position you wonder how you can do.

Cases range from mild to extreme and develop under a multitude of conditions, including passive, inherited, or abstinent as a result of a genetic disorder, depending on activity levels.

What Does This Mean?

Valgum is extremely common, in fact, more common than its genu varum counterpart. It is not a situation to be overly concerned about during youth. Often, as children get older and begin to engage in more strenuous physical activities (e.g., running while playing football), the muscles in the lower extremities will naturally reduce the varum angle. In other words, most of the time valgum resolves on its own.

What If Not?

In most cases, physical therapy is an option to increase strength on the lateral (outer) side of the lower extremities, which will help reduce the angle in a controlled environment. Teaching proper body mechanics through movement will increase the child’s ability to improve his valgum without the trained eye of a physical therapist or the watchful eyes of surrounding parents.

If the angle is more severe, other options may be presented and discussed with an orthopedist and primary care physician to determine the best course of action.
