Above-knee prosthesis covers the area above the knee from below the hip joint of the person. It is specially designed to improve the person’s quality of life after amputation and to help the person continue their daily activities.

Above Knee Prosthesis Features

There are different types of prostheses depending on the person’s needs. Hydraulic above-knee prostheses work with oil pressure. There are different models, some of which have the ability to enter water. It is also possible to perform actions such as climbing stairs and cycling.

Microprocessor models constantly monitor factors such as step length, speed, direction and smoothness of movement and adjust their own behavior. They enable good balance to be achieved in complex movements such as quickly climbing stairs or walking on inclined surfaces.

When is an Above-Knee Prosthetic Leg Used for the First Time?

It begins after the person is amputated, the wounds are closed and the stitches are removed. First of all, a bandage is applied to shape the stump, and exercises are started to prevent movement restriction in the hip joint. Then, a temporary socket is applied to the person and the patient is recommended to use it for a while. During this period, necessary training is given, revision procedures are carried out until no problems occur, then a permanent prosthesis is made and its cosmetic appearance is improved and delivered to the person.

Does the State Cover Above-Knee Prosthesis?

Prosthesis supply conditions are stated in the Annex 3C2 and Annex 3C5 lists of the Social Security Institution’s Health Implementation Communiqué. After the appropriate prosthesis is determined for you, you can benefit from state payment with a report and prescription containing the phrases in the list.

What is the Warranty Period and Lifespan of Above-Knee Prosthetic Leg Prosthesis?

Warranty periods vary depending on the product brand applied. Average warranty periods;

  • 6 months for silicone liner

  • 2-5 years for knee joints

  • 2-3 years for carbon or polyurethane foot

  • 2 years for modular parts.

The social security institution covers a new prosthesis every 5 years or if your prosthesis’s warranty period has expired and it cannot be used.
